Rush - 2112: III. 'Discovery' (Foil Edition)

"This is my take on ‘Discovery' which depicts a man who finds an ancient guitar in a cave as he begins to play. The man is fully ensconced in the shape of the musical tool he’s found, a loose guitar silhouette suggested by the beam of light and surrounding tendrils of energy surrounding the discoverer and warping the area surrounding him with emitted energy. The Chinese money plants at the bottom of the poster arranged to loosely echo Neil Peart’s drum kit, so he is present in some form alongside the two guitars in the image.

The man reconnects with the essence of art that’s been deprived of him through living in the society under the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx in the year 2112. His expression is one of focus as the spirit of music courses through him, blissfully unaware of the trap he’s already in with the grips of the Red Star of the Solar Federation (visually manifested as the star logo he sits upon) that will eventually destroy his means of expression and his soul.

The image pays homage to the classic Starman logo symbolizing the struggle between artless autocracy and the nakedly creative individual." - Miles Tsang

Rush 2112 Art Series

Beginning in 2020, Collectionzz has celebrated International Rush Day on December 21st by asking artists to visually interpret different parts of the legendary album 2112. Each release is limited to only 212 copies. We are thrilled to introduce the fourth installment in our 2112 Art Series; III. "Discovery" by Miles Tsang!

See the past releases:

I. "Overture" by Ian Permana

II. "The Temples of Syrinx" by Palehorse

V. "Oracle: The Dream" by Cuyler Smith

Influenced by the writings of Ayn Rand, the album features the side-long title suite. Based in the future, a galaxy-wide war results in the union of all planets under the rule of the Red Star of the Solar Federation. By 2112, the world is controlled by the “Priests of the Temples of Syrinx,” who determine the content of all reading matter, songs, pictures – every facet of life.

Part III. "Discovery", introduces our main character, who finds a guitar in a remote cave behind a waterfall. Alex Lifeson builds up from simple guitar playing into increasingly complex patterns, showing u the man's progress as he teaches himself to play the guitar:

“…Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was beautiful…”

“…I learned to lay my fingers across the wires, and to turn the keys to make them sound differently. As I struck the wires with my other hand, I produced my first harmonious sounds, and soon my own music! How different it could be from the music of the Temples! I can’t wait to tell the priests about it! …”
