Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon is arguably the most recognizable album in rock and roll history. Spending a record-breaking 741 weeks on the US top albums Billboard charts, the release cemented Pink Floyd’s reputation as the premiere rock band of a generation.
After technical difficulties halted Floyd’s first performance on January 20, 1972, the group took the stage one night later on January 21st and delivered the first-ever, full-length performance of The Dark Side Of The Moon. The audience in Portsmouth, UK unknowingly witnessed music history on that date, with literally millions (probably billions) of people having been profoundly affected by the The Dark Side Of The Moon. They heard it live first.
Everything about the album, including the gatefold sleeve and packaging artwork by Hipgnosis that has become synonymous with the band itself. The band challenged Hipgnosis to create a "simple and bold" design, and they delivered the most iconic album cover and packing in history. To further create thought provocation, the album also included a poster and stickers, two of which are pictured below:
